Your diet is the most important factor in maintaining good skin but there are other factors that may contribute to acne besides your diet. However, I will focus on supplements that I have used as a treatment to clear my acne. Furthermore, think of these supplements for good skin as a treatment that will help your beautiful skin do what it is suppose to do — glow.
Your Skin Type
On my previous post I talked about the five general skin types. The five general skin types are: combination, dry, normal, oily, and sensitive skin.
Combination skin displays the presence of two or more of the five general skin types. Generally, the skin is often oily in the T-zone, while other parts of the face may be excessively dry. With combination skin you may experience acne near the oiler areas of your face, usually the T-zone.
Dry skin is a common skin condition that can occur at any age. The skin appears to be dehydrated, inflamed, irritated, and peeled. There may be certain parts of the face that have patches of dry skin. You will also notice small, invisible pores.
Normal skin exhibits a good balance of moisture, small visible pores, and an even tone. With this skin type one may have minor blemishes. However, the skin texture is smooth.
Oily skin experience quite a bit of too much shine and it is common to struggle with acne breakouts. Due to oily skin the pores may seem larger and you may find yourself having to reapply your makeup through the day because of the excessive oil. Acne is more prone with oily skin because the excess oil on the surface can block pores.
Sensitive Skin may show any of the conditions from the other four general skin types, however, with added sensitivity. Due to the skin being more sensitive they may be more vulnerable to the products that they use for their skin care.
No matter your skin type I believe that one should always take vitamins because we do not get all the vitamins that we need on the daily. The vitamins I took during my acne journey and afterwards were Women’s Alive Mult-Vitamins.
In 2003, a Stanford University study published in the Archives of Dermatology found that college students had acne flare-ups during exams, a period in which they reported more stress, compared to periods without testing. Acne severity correlated highly with increasing stress, the researchers concluded.
I experienced stress acne the most while I was in undergrad and while I was prepping for the LSAT. Furthermore, I noticed that my skin would breakout whenever my scores on my practice exams were low. In undergrad, most of my breakouts happened right before final exams. I was always stressed about maintaining a good grade point average. Additionally, this made me pay attention to my skin to see what would work for me and what wouldn’t. I took supplements throughout the semester to see if they would work as many indicated that it helped them along their skin care journey.
One of the supplements that I took was called Hum Red Carpet SoftGels which also helped my hair grow and I noticed glowing skin.
Another supplement that I used were L-Lysine tablets. These tablets had a lot more to them than just reduce stress and clear my skin. After taking these tablets for 10 days I begin to notice the difference in my skin.
Some people get acne because of what they consume on the daily such as foods high in sugar and carbs. However, if you indulge in white bread, white rice, cake, and sodas because they are full of sugar and carbs. These type of foods may also produce more oil production in your skin and lead to breakouts.
The supplements I used for this was Omega 3 and fish oil. These supplements help reduce oil production and prevent acne. Also, by paying attention to what I ate and how much of the foods that were high in sugars and carbs made me realize that I could control what I ate and work my skin care. Once I was able to balance my meals and implemented supplements for good skin with acne issues all that was left was to maintain my daily skin care routine.
Is acne, the reason it got the name of “hormonal acne” was because many link it to the fact that this type pf acne is most common in teenagers that are going through the changes of puberty. However, acne in adults could be induced by other hormonal factors. In women, acne can occur during their menstrual cycle, pregnancy, and menopause. However, there are supplements that help regulate your hormones.
Supplements used to manage hormonal acne consisted of: Magnesium, Zinc, Probiotics, and B-Vitamins. Also, Aloe Vera soft gels helped in combating redness and inflammation. These soft gels helped soothed the skin faded acne scars.
Know What Works for You
It is important to know your skin type and what products and supplements work best for you. Therefore, you should test products and supplements one at a time so that you know if it is working for you. First, you need to know your skin type. Secondly, you need to learn how to prevent stress from taking over your acne. Third, you need to keep a close eye on what you eat and what makes your skin breakout. Lastly, you need to know if you have hormonal acne while you’re a teenager or an adult.
This may take some time to figure out, however, soon you will understand why your skin is breaking out and what products and supplements will work for you. Make sure that the products you are using to wash your face are not causing the breakouts and test one product at a time. Also, with supplements you want to take one at a time to see if it works.
There are many supplements available on the market that you can use but be careful with what you use. It is also important to research the supplements that you are planning on purchasing.
